Testing it all

Nearly two years after I bought it, the Vespa was starting to come together. With the motor in, electrics connected, and the cables in position it was time to make sure the controls did what they were made to do.

The accelerator stumped me for a while, as the handgrip didn't spring back, depsite greasing the handle sleeve, the cable and making sure the carby spring was good. In the end, I've left it how it is, after Frank from Vespa House told me it wasn't unusual for the Vespas of that era. back.

The support for the clutch adjustor had broken off - a previous repair job had failed so I've had to use some metal putty to repair it.

The threaded sleeve that attaches the speedo cable to the speedo proved a major pain in the arse. The sleeve would slip down the fork tube and would take some to fish out with a straightened wire coat hanger. A bit of electrical tape under the sleeve solves the problem.

The motor fired up nice and fine, although at present its running pretty rough, I need to adjust the carby idle and do the timing. Go to Scooter Help for some good info on how to tune your Vespa. I've nearly worked it out...
